Dolphin Diary – January 2012

Hi Everyone,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope you have all had an enjoyable start to 2012.

There have been plenty of dolphins around over the last few weeks. I have seen all the regulars including Wave, Ripple, Tallula, Bianca, Hope, Marianna, Unhap, Bronny, Ollie, Star, Tiffany, Bubbles and Georgie.

Wave has been having an absolute ball bow riding and jumping in front of the “Dolphin Explorer”, a large boat that departs for a 2 hour return cruise from the dock by the lighthouse.

A trip on the Dolphin Explorer is a great way to see the dolphins and learn about the history of the port. The dolphins have become very used to the boat and will often make their way over to it when they see and hear it coming. I often see the dolphins surfing in the bow waves and also get the opportunity to see some of the Port River Dolphins that I do not regularly see from the land.

The hot weather entices a lot more people out on their kayaks, boats and jet skis. Have fun if you are out there but please take care and do not circle and harass the dolphins. They will often come over to you if they are interested otherwise, they are probably fishing or resting and it is best to let them be.

This month’s photos are of Marianna having a look above the water, Wave jumping in front of the Dolphin Explorer and Ripple leaping.

Have a great month. Look out for the next dolphin update on Friday 3rd February.

Best Wishes

Marianna
